Happy United Nations Day! How Do You Celebrate?

Happy United Nations Day! How Do You Celebrate?Sydney Bellinghausen, 2026-27 Iowa UNA College Ambassador from the University of Iowa
On October 24th, 1945, in the wake of World War II, leaders from around the globe brought aspirations of global peace, security, and development to life by signing the UN Charter. This document created the United Nations and its six principal organs, which aimed to promote cooperation amongst nations to solve economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian needs. Two years later, in 1947, the UN General Assembly voted to memorialize the October 24th date as United Nations Day. In 1971, the General Assembly recommended that its 193 member states recognize the day as a public holiday. The holiday serves as a time to reflect on the long history of diplomacy and human prosperity supported by the UN. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the diverse cultures of all 193 UN members by exploring the unique ways each country commemorates the United Nations.
Around the world, schools, cities, and community members celebrate UN Day with cultural showcases, speaker events, and educational programming. Many UN Day celebrations, particularly those hosted by academic institutions, invite scholars, leaders, and advocates who highlight the impact of the United Nations ' work in local communities. These events often collaborate with student organizations and local UN chapters to bridge local and international communities. Student collaborations are a great way to highlight the importance of youth in the UN, bringing young people into discussions surrounding international concerns. Many institutions host UN roundtables where students share their cultural backgrounds or involvement in UN activities.
Celebrations of United Nations Day all carry a common theme; they highlight the beautifully diverse, rich, and impactful history of the largest international organization in history. An organization that began as a response to immense tragedy has flourished into a multi-lateral tool used to address global security, prosperity, and humanitarian aid. The UN is no longer a platform to prevent conflict, rather, it has become a platform for hope, development, and prosperity for millions around the world. Each UN Day celebration is unique in its activities, food, and culture. But all celebrations carry the spirit of the United Nations of peace, justice, and respect.
Happy United Nations Day!
