A Message from Teta Banks, UNA-USA National Council Chair

Friends,

This week, we’ve painfully witnessed an affront to the values of peace, equality, and human rights that our UNA-USA network stands for. The devastating events in Charlottesville demonstrate the destruction brought when hateful thoughts become hurtful actions. Like you, these sad days weigh heavy on my heart and emphasize even more the importance of tolerance and inclusion—principles at the core of the United Nations’ mission.

Since our start, UNA-USA members have carried the torch for the UN’s work and values in the United States. Inspired by the UN Charter, we uphold the dignity and worth of every person and strive to make a better world for all. While our network has made important strides to promote peace and inclusivity in our communities and in the world, recent events highlight the need for more action.

In the wake of Charlottesville, UN Human Rights experts warned of rising racial hatred in the U.S. And UN Secretary General António Guterres called for the world to ‏unequivocally condemn racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia. Social progress begins with us, and UNA-USA members are uniquely equipped to be beacons of light in this dark moment of American history.

I invite you to join me in encouraging our communities to support the human rights of others. If you’re looking for a way to make a difference, please host an event to “Stand Up for Someone’s Rights,” through our special and timely partnership with the UN Human Rights Office. Together, these local actions and demonstrations of peace can fuel a national movement for inclusivity. Remember, in the words of Martin Luther King Jr.: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do

that.” Thank you for lighting the way to a better world.

— Teta Banks, UNA-USA National Council Chair
